CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES!
Reading Educators Guild held its annual graduate reception on June
1st in the Reading Clinic to honor the 1997 reading graduates. The
well attended reception provided an opportunity for the 1997 recipients
of the Master of Science in Reading to gather together before commencement
and socialize with fellow students and faculty. At the reception
REG awarded Diane Gairing, a continuing graduate student, with a
one hundred and fifty dollar scholarship to assist in the completion
of her program studies. Carla Thomson was honored as the "Outstanding
Graduate," and Karen Starkey received the Edwin Carr Fellowship
award. Each of the graduates was also awarded a one year honorary
membership in REG. Reading Educators Guild welcomes and congratulates
each and every one of the 1997 graduates.

WINTER DINNER
The annual REG Winter Dinner in March 1997 was a great success.
The many members in attendance were treated to an informative and
motivating presentation entitled, Phonemic Awareness and Phonics
in the Early Literacy Program given by Dr. Hallie Yopp and Dr. Ashley
Bishop.

COMING SOON TO A DISTRICT NEAR YOU!
Representatives from the Department of Elementary, Bilingual, and
Reading Education recently attended a State Department of Education
meeting to review video taped demonstration lessons on phonics,
phonemic awareness and assessment. Unfortunately, they were quite
disappointed with the isolated drill and practice techniques recommended
in the videos. These videos are scheduled for distribution to school
districts statewide. As reading educators and experts in the field
we must make our district officials aware of sound practices in
the teaching and assessment of reading skills.

Technology Talk
Need a little inspiration? Take a look at this inspiring program.
Inspirations is a visual idea development and communication program
that enables students to graphically organize their thoughts. It
is an ideal tool for creating concept maps for stories, text chapters,
essays or articles and converting those maps to outlines for writing.
Students may use the pre-made templates provided or they may create
their own graphic designs from scratch. The program is adaptable
to almost any subject area and grade level. It has been used effectively
with college critical thinking students as well as middle and high
school students. To preview this program on the world wide web simply

food for thought
In my critical thinking class I have a cookie jar on my desk and
students are welcome to come and take a treat before or after class.
But don’t worry I am not bringing food into EC24A. Instead
the jar is filled with food for thought. Each of the colored strips
of paper contains a quote, or other thought provoking message, for
my students to ponder. Sometimes these quotes turn up in student
papers (correctly referenced of course), and sometimes they serve
as an introduction to class discussion or journal writing. This
activity can be adapted to any age level depending on the sophistication
of the material. My students seem to enjoy this and will always
ask if I forget to bring in the cookie jar. Perhaps some of these
little "tasty treats" will inspire great thinking in your
classrooms.
